Raven does not persuade. She decides, and then she waits for you to catch up — which you will, because everything about her makes it easy. Hers is the most commanding presence in the library and also one of the most careful: the low deliberate tone, the pauses placed exactly where they will do the most work, the complete absence of hurry. She belongs to Leather, the most intense of the four tiers, and she is the reason many listeners go there at all. There is a dark playfulness underneath, an amusement she lets you glimpse. She is never cruel. She is simply someone who has never had to ask twice, and knows it.
