Stop Being Safe

In a rain-soaked dance studio at one in the morning, all rosin-scented air, cold stone windowsills, and a single streetlight turning two silhouettes into edge and glow. Aurora and Caleb finally close the five-year distance that a competition photograph and one held gaze at a wedding have made unbearable. Aurora arrives telling herself it's kindness, but the lie dissolves the moment his hand slides past decorum to where it always should have been, and she moves it there herself. Her internal struggle is the terror of wanting completely in a way she cannot survive by halves, of being known too well to pretend, and surrendering to instruction as its own form of being chosen. What unfolds is a correction of everything unspoken: shame and restraint giving way to deliberate, witnessed desire, until five years of held breath finally, irreversibly exhale.
